In October, the professor of Peking University, Dr Stephen Minas, offered an online conference for the students of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management that the UPF-BSM offers jointly with ESCI-UPF. It was a great opportunity for them to better understand the role played by events like the COP on the climate change political and legal context.
COP28 holds unparalleled importance as the world grapples with escalating climate crises. In 2023, this conference is a pivotal moment for nations to strengthen commitments and enact tangible measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change. As global temperatures rise and extreme weather events intensify, COP28 serves as a crucial platform for fostering international collaboration and driving urgent action.
The decisions made at this conference will directly influence the trajectory of our planet’s environmental health, shaping policies that aim to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, and transition to sustainable energy sources.
The COP28 conference marks a crucial juncture in global efforts to combat climate change. As nations convene to address pressing environmental challenges, the significance of COP28 extends beyond policy and into the realm of education.
To discuss all these implications, we were delighted to follow the conference of our esteemed guest speaker, Dr Stephen Minas, who graced our Climate Change classes with his invaluable expertise. Dr. Minas, a luminary in the field, served as the former Chair of the Technological Executive Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
He continues to make significant contributions as a dedicated committee member, actively engaging in negotiations within the UNFCCC framework. His illustrious career includes representing Greece and the European Union in past Conference of Parties COPs, showcasing his deep understanding of international climate negotiations.
Dr. Minas offered profound insights into climate change negotiations in his session, delving into crucial topics such as the expectations surrounding the imminent COP28 meeting. Dr Minas shared valuable information regarding the organizational endeavours for a groundbreaking global stocktake exercise. This year marks the inaugural execution of this exercise, designed to assess collective progress toward fulfilling the objectives of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
Additionally, students engaged in discussions about the anticipated reallocation of essential climate funding prompted by conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine. They explored how these geopolitical issues might impact the positions of negotiating parties. Dr. Minas’ comprehensive overview not only illuminated the intricacies of climate negotiations but also encouraged a deeper understanding of the multifaceted challenges and considerations at play in the global pursuit of climate goals.
We are truly privileged to have hosted such a distinguished expert, enriching the learning experience for our students.
